Rushes Cloud, El Marqués del RAW’s new solution to reduce the purchase of hard drives, optimize the management of camera material and facilitate its delivery to post-production.
What if your next production didn’t have to buy all the hard drives it needs?
In audiovisual production, every shoot generates a growing amount of data. Digital cameras record images in high resolution that must be downloaded and duplicated to ensure that the original material is protected and can reach editing and post-production.
Until now, a usual part of this process consists of buying hard drives or SSDs for each project. At the end of the shoot, the drives with the camera material are delivered to production and, later, to post-production. The production company thus assumes the cost of the devices, their availability and their management, even when many of them are only needed for a limited period.
Added to this situation are the rising cost of storage units and possible supply problems, which can complicate shoot planning.
Is there a more flexible alternative?
At El Marqués del RAW we present Rushes Cloud, a service that combines SSD rental for shooting with the management and storage of audiovisual material in the cloud. The goal is simple: to reduce the need to buy drives for each production and to make it easier for files to reach post-production digitally.
Rushes Cloud: from the on-set SSD to the cloud
The system starts from a practical idea: to use rental SSD units during the shoot and then move the material to a managed storage infrastructure.
How it works is simple:
- Shuttle SSD rental
- Each production has SSD units with capacities adapted to its needs, such as 4, 8, 12 or 16 TB, subject to availability. In this way, it does not need to buy all the storage that each project requires.
- Reception and management of the material
- Once the shoot is finished, the SSDs are sent to the Rushes Cloud facilities. There the transfer of the material to local storage and its upload to an S3 cloud storage system are managed, according to the contracted conditions.
- Digital delivery to post-production
- Instead of depending exclusively on the physical shipping of drives, the production company or post-production house can download the files from the cloud, both in Spain and abroad, provided it has an adequate connection.
- Storage adapted to each project
- Each production has its own capacity and retention requirements. Rushes Cloud allows different modalities to be proposed depending on the volume of material, the storage time and the delivery needs.
- The result is a more flexible workflow, in which storage no longer depends exclusively on the purchase of physical devices.
What advantages does it offer a production company?
- Less investment in hard drives
- One of the main benefits is reducing the purchase of storage units for each new shoot.
- Instead of acquiring drives that may remain stored unused once the material has been delivered, the production company contracts the resources it needs during the agreed period. This allows the expense to be better adjusted to each project.
- Less dependence on prices and supply
- When a production needs a large storage capacity, price variations or lack of availability can become a planning problem.
- A rental and storage service contracted in advance makes it possible to reduce that dependence and budget data needs with greater predictability. The financial conditions will depend on the capacity, the duration and the services contracted.
- More flexibility for advertising and fiction
- Not all productions generate the same volume of data or need to keep it for the same amount of time.
- In advertising, where many shoots are concentrated in two or three days, it is especially interesting to adjust storage to each campaign. In fiction, with shoots that can last several weeks and generate dozens of terabytes, having a scalable solution facilitates the planning of ingestion and the retention of the material.
- Rushes Cloud seeks to adapt to both realities, without forcing the same storage model to be used for all projects.
- Post-production without depending on physical transport
- The material may need to travel much further than the shooting crew. A campaign can be produced in Barcelona and edited in Madrid, London or any other city.
- Delivery from the cloud allows remote access to the files and reduces the logistics associated with shipping drives. Download time will depend on the volume of data, the available connection and the transfer modality used.
- Fewer devices to buy, manage and store
- Recurring drive purchases also involve managing inventory, labeling, transport, storage and reuse of the units.
- By working with rental SSDs, these devices can be used in different projects, reducing the need to buy and accumulate your own units. It is a way to simplify logistics and make better use of storage resources.
- An alternative that favors reuse
- Sustainability also matters in audiovisual data management. Reusing SSD units between productions can reduce the need to acquire new devices for each shoot and favor a more efficient use of resources.
- The total environmental impact will depend, among other factors, on the useful life of the devices, the cloud infrastructure used and the data transfers. That is why the goal is to move towards a more reusable and efficient model, without losing sight of the technical requirements of audiovisual work.
Cloud storage and material security
The original camera files are one of the most important assets of any production. Their loss can have significant economic and operational consequences.
That is why moving the material to the cloud does not simply consist of uploading files: it is necessary to define how they are received, copied, verified and retained.
The Rushes Cloud flow contemplates the transfer of the material to local storage and its upload to the cloud, in accordance with the conditions of the contracted service. Effective protection will depend on the copies included, the systems used and the agreed retention periods.
Having independent copies can reduce exposure to incidents such as the failure, loss or misplacement of a physical drive. The key is to establish adequate procedures and check the integrity of the material before considering each transfer complete.
A new way to manage on-set data
Audiovisual production is constantly evolving, and storage management also needs to adapt. Camera resolution, file volume and post-production needs make it increasingly important to plan how data is transported, retained and delivered.
Rushes Cloud was created to offer an alternative to the model based exclusively on buying drives for each project: renting the necessary capacity, managing the material and facilitating access from post-production through cloud storage.
Because the question is no longer only how many drives a shoot needs, but how to ensure that the material is available when and where it is needed, with a cost and storage structure adapted to each production.
